I Am Reading 52 Business(ish) Books Before The End of 2022

Why?

After leaving the military I felt like I needed to improve my reading routine and set a goal to read at least one book a month. After a fortuitous post on LinkedIn, a few friends and I started the Business Minds Book Club it changed my life and many of theirs. It didn't happen right away, but focused reading coupled with discussing action steps with an accountability group has led each of us to new personal and professional heights over the last couple of years.

The details don't matter for this blog but suffice it to say that reading a book a month and actively applying select principles from each book has led to multiple promotions, improved relationships, and incredible opportunities for just about everyone in our small book club.

Hence the question that hit me while setting my vision for 2022, "what if I read a book a week instead of just once a month?"

Well, only one way to find out.

So here we go. 52 books in 2022.

Oh, and the reason I say "business(ish) books" is because my intent is to find and study books that help me improve my business, which doesn't just mean books written directly for business. For instance, Think and Grow Rich by Napolean Hill is one of the best books ever written to help people succeed in business, but it's not necessarily a 'business book'.

This blog will be a fun way to hold myself accountable and it provides an easy way to share what I learn with anyone else who might be interested. Selfishly I'm also hoping it will lead to even more suggestions for great books that I could read next.

Plus, these folks seem to think it's a good idea, so why not try it out?

“Reading is still the main way that I both learn new things and test my understanding.” - Bill Gates

“Read 500 pages…every day. That’s how knowledge works. It builds up, like compound interest. All of you can do it, but I guarantee not many of you will do it.” - Warren Buffett

“Reading is essential for those who seek to rise above the ordinary.” - Jim Rohn

“The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you’ll go.” - Dr. Seuss

“Once you have read a book you care about, some part of it is always with you.” - Louis L’Amour

“[F]rom the reading of ‘good books’ there comes a richness of life that can be obtained in no other way.” - Gordon B. Hinckley

“There is more treasure in books than in all the pirate's loot on Treasure Island.” - Walt Disney

“A room without books is like a body without a soul.” - Cicero

“The man who does not read good books is no better than the man who can’t.” - Mark Twain

“I would continuously search for new ideas. I read every book and magazine I could. Heck, 3 bucks for a magazine, 20 bucks for a book. One good idea that led to a customer or solution and it paid for itself many times over.” - Mark Cuban

“Show me a family of readers, and I will show you the people who move the world.” - NapolĂ©on Bonaparte

“I read books.” - Elon Musk (This has got to be one of my favorites)

Here's to an incredible 2022!

Also, I am always on the prowl for my next great book. What life-changing books have you read recently? I'm excited to see your comments below.

Book Description: In this eye-opening account, Cal Newport debunks the long-held belief that "follow your passion" is good advice.  Not only is the clichĂ© flawed-preexisting passions are rare and have little to do with how most people end up loving their work-but it can also be dangerous, leading to anxiety and chronic job-hopping. After making his case against passion, Newport sets out on a quest to discover the reality of how people end up loving what they do. Spending time with organic farmers, venture capitalists, screenwriters, freelance computer programmers, and others who admitted to deriving great satisfaction from their work, Newport uncovers the strategies they used and the pitfalls they avoided in developing their compelling careers. Matching your job to a preexisting passion does not matter, he reveals. Passion comes after you put in the hard work to become excellent at something valuable, not before. In other words, what you do for a living is much less important

Think Again - A Book about Rethinking Your Opinions and Reshaping Thought Patterns

Book Description: The bestselling author of Give and Take and Originals examines the critical art of rethinking in Think Again : learning to question your opinions and open other people's minds, which can position you for excellence at work and wisdom in life Intelligence is usually seen as the ability to think and learn, but in a rapidly changing world, there's another set of cognitive skills that might matter more: the ability to rethink and unlearn. In our daily lives, too many of us favor the comfort of conviction over the discomfort of doubt. We listen to opinions that make us feel good, instead of ideas that make us think hard. We see disagreement as a threat to our egos, rather than an opportunity to learn. We surround ourselves with people who agree with our conclusions when we should be gravitating toward those who challenge our thought process. The result is that our beliefs get brittle long before our bones. We think too much like preachers defending our sacred belie

But what if it wasn't that way? What if you had a team of people around you that helped you accomplish your goals (while you helped them accomplish theirs)? When we want something done, we've been trained to ask ourselves: "How can I do this?" Well, there is a better question to ask. One that unlocks a whole new world of ease and accomplishment.
